I absolutely despise food waste. Not only is it bad for the environment, but it’s like throwing money away. We use a Mill to process our food waste into chicken feed, so it’s not *as* bad, but I still hate it.

This week, I looked at the refrigerator and tried to delay grocery shopping at least for a few days to force me to use what I had in the refrigerator.

A well-stocked refrigerator with various containers of food, condiments, and beverages, showcasing a mix of leftovers, dairy products, and vegetables.

We definitely needed to focus on finishing the cottage cheese since its Best Buy date was later in the week. (Spoiler: we finished it all up.) We also need to finish up the watermelon and knock out the leftovers.

We have an opened container of guacamole that is probably going bad, as well as the unfinished feta dip. Someone whom I won’t name ate all of the crackers, otherwise that feta dip would be gone.

A refrigerator shelf containing a bag of organic apples, a yellow bell pepper, and several limes.

The bag of apples was definitely still fine, so I needed to focus on the one small apple remaining, the bell peppers, and the limes. I plan to put the small apple in Mr. FF’s lunch and use the limes and peppers to make pad Thai.

An assortment of fresh vegetables and salad items in a refrigerator, including a bag of salad mix, containers with mixed vegetables, celery, a sweet potato, and a cucumber.

I didn’t buy any more salad stuff since there was plenty still left. I put salads in Mr. FF’s lunch almost every day, so finishing that up won’t be a problem. I do need to focus on the celery and sweet potato.

A close-up of a cluster of grapes in a colander, showing signs of mold on some of the fruits.

The grapes killed me. They went into the Mill. I probably could have salvaged some of them, but I get the ick when fruit is moldy like this.

How do you avoid food waste? Any tips or tricks?

I’m Mrs. Frugal Forward

Welcome to Frugal Forward, my blog documenting the impact of the new administration on our daily life here in the United States. I have resolved to embrace frugality both out of spite (I refuse to contribute more to that man’s economy than is absolutely necessary) and because I’m not sure how bad things are going to get. I’m hoping for the best, but planning for the absolute worst. I invite you to join me as my family navigates the unknown. We have to stick together. Also, do not obey in advance.
